SHILLONG, MAY 26: Even as the twenty-four hour bandh called by Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) started on Tuesday evening the state police have warned to take up cases against anyone indulging in criminal acts.
The bandh, effective in the districts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, was called against the government’s failure to pass the pending village administration bills passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
The HNLC has also called for a one – week 8pm to 6am night road blockade from May 27 to June 2. The bandh on Tuesday got off at 6 pm and will remain till Wednesday 6 pm.
Police, however, warned of stern action against anyone found indulging in criminal acts during the hours of bandh and night road blockade.
“We will take up a case under Unlawful Activities (P) Act and MMPO Act against anyone found indulging in criminal acts during the bandh and road blockade,” East Khasi Hills District SP M Kharkrang said on Tuesday night.
He also said, “Accused will be treated as HNLC cadres.”
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the state’s capital and different districts affected by the shutdown to ensure that there is no untoward incident during the hours of bandh.- By Our Reporter
