SHILLONG, SEPT 2: The police have so far arrested fourteen members of different pressure groups for their alleged involvement in arsons before and during Monday’s twelve hours bandh which ended at 5 pm.
Briefing reporters after the bandh on Monday, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang informed, “We have arrested the fourteen people from the different parts of the city.” He said most of the arrested are members either from the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF).
The arrested persons have been identified as Samkupar Lyngdoh (28), Walstar Nongdhar (28), Anthony Sangma (32), Balan Kharkongor (28) from 7th miles, Jibarkor Thabah (22), Banjop War (23) from Pynthorbah, Stadbor Dhar (27) and John Syiemlieh (20) from Mawsynram, Shanborlang Kshiar (30) and David Ryngki (23) from Mawlai Mawroh , Wanlambok Wansai (21), Smallingstar Nongsiang (24), Esteliborn Khonglam (22) from Mawlai Iewrynghep and Arki Rymbai (25) from Lumdiengjri .
Kharkhrang informed that police recovered catapults with latches from the arrested which would prove very fatal if hit at people. “He said, “We have registered cases against them as attempt to murder on this regard.”
The arrested have been booked under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO) and other sections of the IPC; Kharkhrang informed adding, “We are coming down heavily against such people.”
Meanwhile Meghalaya principal secretary (home) KS Kropha said the bandh went off peacefully with only stray incidents reported from across the state. He, however, said miscreants pelted stones at the vehicle of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) at Demthring in the city and the another vehicle belonging to a doctor from a city hospital.
Kropha also revealed that there were also attempt made to stone the vehicle of the state home secretary but fortunately nothing happen.
Kropha also claimed that there were no incidents reported from the five districts of Garo hills and that the bandh had less impact in the plain belt areas of Garo hills region. He said police had tightened up security during the bandh and before its commencement.
Kropha said, “Police have put up double shift duties. The security arrangement was very detail and comprehensive.” He said that the state police are keeping things under control and situation under close watch and are on high alert to ensure that there is no room for complacency.
Though Kropha said that the security strength is adequate as of now but if required additional forces would be requested from the union government.
Ngos consisting among others the KSU and FKJGP had called for a twelve hours bandh to put pressure on the government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya to control illegal migrants from entering the state. – By Our Reporter
