Ban use of plastics

SHILLONG, APR 5: Opposition Congress leader Charles Pyngrope today urged the state government to ban the use of plastics in the state.

“We should ban the use of plastics in the state as some of the states have succeeded in curtailing or minimize the use of plastics,” Pyngrope said while participating in the debate on the Governor’s Address in the Assembly here on Thursday.

Referring to the practice of using a cloth bag by people in the past, he said, “It (ban) may inconvenience us for a while but we have survived in the past by using a cloth bag.”

Expressing concern over system of dumping garbage which has become a today’s burning issue, the senior Congress leader further stressed on the need to construct garbage bins in the different parts of the city.

According to him, this will minimize throwing of garbage in the rivers, streams, and other places.

On the issue of traffic snarls, the Nongthymmai MLA suggested the government to come up with a system for introduction of school bus to ferry students which will address the traffic congestion in the city.

“The government should introduce a system where all schools should have buses as this will ease the traffic congestion,” he said.

He added, “In fact it will be cheaper for the parents instead of them driving their cars (to drop their children to school).”

Also urging the state government to consider improving and upgrading the playgrounds with the state gearing up to host the National Games 2022, Pyngrope said that Shillong as it is today is no longer the Scotland of the East but is Manhattan of the East.

According to him, there is hardly any space in the city and playing fields that are there also do not have the necessary infrastructures.

He also said that the sports personalities who have brought laurel to the state should also be included in the Committee to oversee the preparation for the mega sports event.
