Ball in CM’s court: HNLC

SHILLONG, AUG 26: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) put the ball in the court of Mukul Sangma led coalition government for initiating the peace process after it made clear that it is willing to come under a bilateral ceasefire agreement even as it continues to hold the former chief minister  DD Lapang responsible for derailing the earlier peace process.

The HNLC also asked former home minister RG Lyngdoh to stop provoking the outfit.

“We had expressed our willingness and now it is up to the leadership of the chief minister Mukul Sangma to give peace a chance,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement on Tuesday.

Sainkupar said the outfit also hopes that the state government will communicate the same to the centre for  enabling towards working together to achieve a common purpose (peace).

Terming the recent claimed made by Rev PBM Basaiawmoit as nothing but an act of  protecting Lapang, Sainkupar said, “His (Basaiawmoit) statements was not found to be satisfactory as it was confirmed by the outfit that the peace process was derailed by DD Lapang and Julius Dorphang, former HNLC chairman and now MLA.”

Sainkupar  also asked how the Lapang can blame the centre for failure of his government as it was his failure to convince the then UPA Congress government under the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh.

Sainkupar  further stated that the blame  to the central government for failure becomes contradictory as the ANVC had also signed the ceasefire agreement in the year 2004 and till date the central government (former UPA, present NDA) is communicating with the leadership of the ANVC, whereas in the case of HNLC the entire peace process was derailed. He questioned, “Why this step motherly attitude with the HNLC.”

“This proves beyond doubt the selfish motives of DD Lapang which solely was responsible for the damage,” Sainkupar said alleging that in inviting reference to all the communications that took place between the centre and the CM, the HNLC was not intimidated about the derailment of the peace process.

Sainkupar also said that HNLC expressed its willingness for peace talks after the initiative taken by chief minister Mukul Sangma on August 15 calling for peace dialogue with underground groups.

Reacting to the statement of former home minister RG Lyngdoh who had expressed opposition to ceasefire agreement with any militant outfits citing such move will not help resolving militancy problem in the state, Sainkupar said “It seems that even RG Lyngdoh was not happy by our decision but charity begins at home and Lyngdoh should try to resolve his affairs than to interfere into the affairs of the HNLC.”  He said Lyngdoh should stop provoking the HNLV when we the outfit has decided to abjure violence and enter into a peace process.”- By Our Reporter
