TURA, DEC 9: Dreaded Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) second-in- command Baichung alias Nikam Ch Momin surrendered before the South Garo Hills SP Anand Mishra at Baghmara on Friday. He deposited one 5.56 X 45 HK-33 rifle, 120 live cartridges and one magazine among others.
The thirty-five year old Baichung had survived at least a dozen police encounters but decided to lay down arms.
Misra said, “With Baichung surrender it means it is the end of GNLA.”
The last of the encounters Baichung survived took place just a few days ago at Dabalgre in which two insurgents were gunned down by the police. Mishra said the GNLA was left with just around 25 members but mostly without much firepower.
After the demonetization of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes all terror-generated funds of Baichung were detected by the police and two persons were also arrested and two bank accounts freezed.
