SHILLONG, DEC 22: Union minister of state holding Independent charge of AYUSH ministry Shripad Yessa Naik on Thursday underscored on the need to preserve and promote knowledge of traditional healers from across the north eastern region.

“We have to take this knowledge and use it in our modern system. We are trying to take and make it scientifically validated based on ethno- botanical and scientific research with practical suitability for clinical practices,” he said.

Nail said this while inaugurating the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH) permanent campus located near NEIGHRIMS at Mawdiangdiang.

Dedicating the lone institute in the north east to the nation, Naik said that the NEIAH will stress on research related to traditional medicines from the region including Meghalaya.

North eastern region has different types of folks and traditional healthcare practices among the different ethnic groups and tribes of the region and having a permanent campus of NEIAH in Shillong will help in researching these traditional practices.

“Shillong, which is the gateway of NE India and educational hub, will give additional benefit to the inter-disciplinary research and for exploring biological sciences,” he added.

There are 31 research centres across the country and he informed that people are willing to accept the AYUSH healing system.

He also informed that if required the Centre may also consider setting up a medicinal plant board for the entire north eastern region even if there are existing boards in respective states.

Naik also said that the primary aim of the institute is to produce quality human resource in the area of AYUSH in general and particularly in the Ayurveda and homeopathy along with yoga system.

“It will provide quality research and inter-disciplinary translational research in the area of plant based medical sciences namely Ayurveda and homeopathy,” he informed.

With NE region facing shortage of doctors, Naik said that the establishment of this institute will also help solve the problem of scarcity of doctors in the remote and hilly backward areas of the entire NE.

He was of the opinion that quality and standard education will help implement and improve execution of national health policy for the welfare of the needy people of the region.

Naik also declared commencement of the academic session 2016-2017 both under graduate teaching programme of Ayurveda and Homeopathy.

He said that admission has already been completed and teaching programme has been started adding it comprised the second Ayurvedic College in the NE region with a Homeopathy College and the lone central academic institute of AYUSH.
