SHILLONG, MAY 14: Three Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militants and United Liberation Front of Asom bomb expert were arrested along with arms and explosives, Police said the four were planning to trigger explosion in the city.
The Meghalaya police acted swiftly after getting intelligence inputs about HNCL cadres’ crossing over into Meghalaya from neighbouring Bangladesh. East Khasi hills police immediately beefed up security in and around the city on Friday.
Because of heavy police checking, the four militants could not execute the plan to plant an explosion as they were arrested from Mawlieh View Point near Langkyrdem by police while they decided to return back to the border.
“The four were arrested by SOT personnel from a Maruti Alto (ML 05 M 3807) at around 9.40 pm yesterday,” East Khasi hills SP M Kharkrang informed.
2 AK 56, 1 with 105 live Chinese rounds, 9mm Mauser with 24 live 9mm rounds, 2 Improvised Claymore Explosives weighing 15.7Kgs in 2 Claymore Boxes, 2 Timer Devices inside plastic spectacle boxes, 2 battery power sources, 1 Multimeter Voltage Testor were recovered from their possession.
“The Bomb Disposal Squad was immediately called to de-activate the explosive where 6 pieces of Commercial Electrical Detonators were detonated using Cordex wire at the spot itself,” Kharkrang said.
While the ULFA bomb expert has been identified as Bikhat Ahom @Smam (29) of Dalaigaon, Bongaigaon, Assam, the three HNLC cadres include – Nobleson Rynjah @Bah Duh @Jack (23) of 2003 batch HNLC from Mawlai Mawkynroh, Phrankor Rynjah @Heh (33) (HNLC 2001 batch) of Smit, Umtyngngew and Kyrseiboklang Lyngdoh (23) an HNLC overground worker of Lapalang.
When asked, the SP said, “ULFA-HNLC nexus is something which is a new but then we had suspected that the blast (Jhalupara) could not be done by the HNLC alone without taking the help of other militant outfit.”
Stating that the HNLC is desperate to make its presence felt, the SP however said, “But every time they tried, they have always been arrested,” adding “We will further strengthen our intelligence to ensure any attempts to create terror by HNLC or any other militant outfits is thwarted.”
Meanwhile, a case has been registered vide Pynursla PS Case No. 12(5)16 u/s 120B/121 IPC r/w Sec 25(1-b)/27Arms Act / Section 5 Explosive Act and Section 10/13 UAP. The arrested militants have been forwarded to court with a request for 14 days police custody, Kharkhrang informed.-By Our Reporter
