GNLA militants’ storm jail, kills asst jailor

SHILLONG, FEB 2: Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) militants stormed the Williamnagar jail and shot dead the assistant jailor Neil Nongkynrih and seriously injured the warder Sarai Singh Thabah on Saturday night. The incident occurred at around 9 pm.

It is learnt that the GNLA militants randomly open fire outside the Williamnagar jail and on hearing the firing outside both the assistant jailor and the warder came out to check as to what was the firing all aboyt. However, the militants opened fire at both of them and Nongkynrih died on the spot while Thabah suffered grievous bullet injuries near the gate of the jail compound.

The militants then fled away. All the jail inmates are said to be secured as none of them got the chance to escape.

Speaking to this website East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri said that Thabah has been rushed to the hospital immediately. He said the warder suffered serious bullet injuries.

Mantri said at the time of the attack, there were only the jail security personnel. He said, “The police’s SWAT and the CRPF’s COBRA teams have launched a massive operation to nab the militants who had attacked the jail.

With the Meghalaya assembly elections slated for February 23, the attack by the GNLA militants has raised serious security issue. The militants of this group has been active in threatening and attacking politicians, especially the former C&RD minister Salseng A Sangma who escaped being killed once and later his house in Tura was also attacked when the militant lobbed a hand grenade.

On Friday two of the ten companies of para-military force have been deployed to Williamnagar for the law and order.- By Our Reporter
