SHILLONG, SEPT 28: The Assembly’s Estimates Committee on Monday reviewed the functioning of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state and directed the Labour department to ensure placement for students after graduation.
Chairman of the committee and BJP legislator from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem said the panel held a meeting with the department to take stock of ITIs in Shillong, Tura, Jowai, Williamnagar, Nongpoh, Ampati, Khliehriat, Mawkyrwat and other places.
“We had a review meeting with the Labour department with regard to various ITIs in different parts of the state. We have instructed the department that after students join ITIs and graduate, the main issue is placement,” Syiem told reporters.
He said, “We have instructed the Labour department to explore possibilities of signing MoUs with various agencies for placement as this is very important with regard to employment for our young boys and girls who pass out from ITIs. We have instructed to ensure that placement should be a priority for those students who graduate from various ITIs across the state.”
Asked if ITIs alone can address unemployment, Syiem said no single agency can fulfill everything.
“In any state, not a single agency or a single factor can fulfill everything. ITI is one part of it. Bringing financial support from outside the state to build factories, industries and corporate houses in the private sector will also help generate employment,” he said.
“Along with the kind of support the state government is giving to entrepreneurs now – CM-Elevate, PRIME etc, these are employment generation initiatives. This is a culmination of efforts of all departments, not only ITI, and it will end up addressing unemployment. That is the endeavour of the government,” he added.
