SHILLONG, AUG 3: The Director General of Assam Rifles Lieutenant General HJS Sachdev presented a cheque of Rs 2 lakh to Olympian Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar and presented furniture to Ferrando Rehabilitation Centre that house specially abled children on Friday.
Lieutenant General Sachdev presented these gifts at a glittering ceremony organised by Assam Rifles at Agartala. He first felicitated Dipa Karmakar, who has become a household name in India after executing the ‘Produnova’ vault to perfection at the Rio Olympics 2016.
Earlier Dipa was also been conferred with the prestigious Khel Ratna award which the 23-year-old gymnast received from the President Pranab Mukherjee on national sports day. General Sachdev hailed Dipa Karmakar, who became the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics Games, saying she brought laurels for the country by her sheer determination.
A statement issued by Assam Rifles on Saturday said, “It was a matter of great pride and honour for the Assam Rifles personnel to have Dipa Karmakar interacting with them and their families.” The Director General presented a cheque of Rs 2 lakh and while also presenting furniture to Ferrando Rehabilitation Centre.
The statement informed that Assam Rifles had earlier sponsored 25 children of the Rehabilitation Centre on a National Integration Tour. The specially-abled children performed a beautiful amalgamation of five tribal dances of Tripura which was applauded by all.
Sachdev is on a two day visit to Tripura and will meet Governor of Tripura Tathagata Roy and chief minister Manik Sarkar.-By Our Reporter
