SHILLONG, JULY 27: The Assam government has finally agreed to allocate ten medical seats to the students of Meghalaya.
Informing this here on Friday, state health minister AL Hek said, “The Assam government has agreed to allocate the ten seats to our students. I have received a telephonic confirmation on this from the Assam health minister Himanta Biswa today.”
He said that recently a letter from the Assam health minister was received informing that they would allocate only two seats for Meghalaya students.
“Thereafter, I immediately wrote back and also spoke to Himanta requesting that our students should not be denied the ten seats that was alloted to Meghalaya,” he said adding “And day before yesterday, Himanta again informed me that they have arranged eight seats while two seats are still being mobilized to which I insisted that we should get our share.”
On September last year, the Supreme Court had passed an order in favour of the Meghalaya government after it filed a petition against the Assam government’s decision to abolish the 10 medical seats reserved for the state.
“Keeping in view the interest of the state of Meghalaya, it is directed that ten seats out of twenty-seven seats shall be allocated to it,” the Apex Court had stated in its order.
Despite the ruling of the Supreme Court, Hek however said, “Yet, this year we again faced the same problem.”
Admitting that any state would like to cater more seats to its own students, the health minister said, “However, Meghalaya students should not be deprived of their rights to get 10 seats till such time that the state has its own medical colleges.”
