SHILLONG, AUG 8: Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) Preeti Saran on Monday inaugurated the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Study Centre at ICSSR-NERC NEHU Campus, Shillong. The inauguration of the study centre followed the announcement of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to open such a centre during the ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 21 last year.
The study centre initially was supposed to be inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for External Affairs Gen (Retd) VK Singh. However due to some unavoidable circumstances Singh cancelled his visit to Shillong.
Addressing on the occasion, Saran said that since the north east falls in the middle of India and ASEAN countries the region was at the core of India-ASEAN relations. According to her, the Act East Policy pursued by the present government is wider in scope geographically.
Interestingly, the ASEAN Study Centre was inaugurated on the 49th foundation day of the grouping.-By Our Reporter
