ASAK militant killed, welder rescued

ASAKBAGHMARA, JULY 1: One ASAK militant was killed and three others were arrested when the South Garo hills police launched an operation against the militant outfit and rescued a labourer Manoranjan Singh who was kidnapped on Friday.

The rescue operation was conducted at Rewak village about six kilometers away from Baghmara at around 5 am on Tuesday.

ASAK militant who was killed has been identified as Bethma Ch Sangm (29) hailing from Silkichigrikgittim village, while the three who were arrested are Arjensing M Marak (19), Aiwal D Shira (19) both of Era Aning, Nongalbibra and Joshwa B Marak (19) from Rewak.

During the operation, police also recovered arms and ammunition from the slain cadre as well as from the spot.

Das is a welder working for Sushil Marak. He was abducted on Friday from his work place by a group of armed militants to a nearby jungle.

The South Garo hill police launched an operation from Monday evening to rescue Das from the clutches of the militants with inputs provided by the villagers of the presence of militants in their area.

Meghalaya IGP (operations) GHP Raju said, “Even though FIR was not filed by the family but police conducted the operation based on inputs provided by the villagers and rescued the welder Manoranjan today at 5 am”.

The exchange of fire between the police and militants lasted for about 20 minutes and in the process one militant was killed and three others were arrested. Police managed to rescue Das unharmed.

The police recovered 1 INSAS rifle with a magazine, 14, 5.56 mm live ammo, one SBBL gun with 2 SBBL ammo, 1 wireless receiver, one bundle of ASAK demand notes and 8 numbers of empty detonators.

ASAK was formed by former Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) finance secretary Reding T Sangma.- From Our Correspondent
