As DHS keeps mum, jobseekers launched stir

DSCSHILLONG, AUG 8: As the government failed to remove those who have been appointed through the backdoor in the Shillong Civil hospital and the different health centres in the East Khasi hills district, the qualified candidates of the district selection committee (DSC) staged a ‘sit-in-demonstration’ demanding the removal of the illegal appointees so that it paves way for their appointment.

The nonchalant attitude of the state’s Directorate of Health Service (DHS) forced the Grade IV DSC Passed Candidates Association to organize a sit in protest in front of the office of the DHS in Laitumkhrah amidst tight security in and around the area. Hundreds of qualified candidates participated in the sit in protest.

“This is our first stage of protest after the DHS failed to meet the deadline which already expired on Monday to terminate all the illegal appointments in the different health centres including the Civil Hospital,” Grade IV DSC Passed Candidates Association vice president B Pyrtuh told reporters on Thursday.

An RTI filed by the association revealed that there were over a 100 vacancy in the health centres. But the DHS filled these posts with temporary, ad hoc and officiating appointments. The Meghalaya government had banned such appointments as illegal.

Pyrtuh said because of such appointment by the DHS there has been delay for the qualified DSC candidates to get appointments.

“We therefore, demand that all such appointments which are illegal should be immediately terminated so that the deserving candidates of the DSC can get the jobs they deserved as they had passed the DSC examination,” Pyrtuh stated.

The association had waited two months for the department to act after it served a deadline. Pyrtuh, now, threatened to intensify agitation if the DHS fails to terminate these illegal appointments.

Two hundred and nine qualified candidates are yet to be given appointment in the different departments out of the 300 that cleared the DSC examination in 2011.- By Our Reporter
