SHILLONG, JULY 28: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will proposed to the state government to consider the need to provide arms to the enforcement staffs of the council, as it maintained it has not violated any rules while conducting its ongoing checking drive against illegal business within its jurisdiction.
“We would soon write to the government seeking its consideration on the need to equip the enforcement wing with arms,” KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit told reporters.
His follows after five staffs of the enforcement wing of the KHADC was badly injured when angry mob attacked them during a checking drive against illegal business by non-indigenous conducted at Iewduh on Friday.
The mob had even attacked and injured pressmen covering the checking drive.
Basaiawmoit also informed that the KHADC will request the government to also extend the same facilities to police appointed by the Hima Mylliem who are looking after the interest and welfare of the market.
The KHADC also came down heavily on a tribal businesswoman, Deoris Marbaniang, saying nobody has the right to cause any physical harm to staffs who are conducting check drive against illegal businesses.
Yesterday, Marbaniang has accused the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for allegedly violating the provision of the council’s Administration of Justice Rules, 1953 while conducting checking drive against illegal business establishments.
Interestingly, Marbaniang is also the mother of Kimfa Marbaniang and wife of Paul Leong, who were two among the 10 accused arrested by the police after the incident took place for allegedly instigating the mob.
Reacting to this, Executive Member in charge Trade Latiplang Kharkongor said, “The KHADC has never violated any rules as alleged,” adding “If we go as per rule, the KHADC has the authority to act immediately on the spot against illegal business establishment, but we chose not to do so by issuing notices before action is to be taken.”
Adding to this, Basaiawmoit however said, “Whether the KHADC violates or not any rules (as alleged by Marbaniang), but nobody has the right to assault and cause injuries to the staffs of the council. He said if anybody feels that council has violated any rules, they are free to go the authority concerned but not harm anybody.”- By Our Reporter
