CEM threaten to cancel company’s license

SHILLONG, JUNE 25: Ardent Basaiawmoit, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), threatened to cancel the trading license of the poultry farm company operating in Ri Bhoi district if it is found guilty of polluting a river source by the inquiry committee of KHADC.

Basaiawmoit assured the council during its session on Wednesday,“The executive committee will not shy away from its responsibility and will take action accordingly as per the report of the inquiry committee instituted by the council against the Meghalaya Agrovet Private Ltd (MGPL) Company.”

The assurance came following motion moved by Independent MDC James Sylliang. Basaiawmoit said  that the EC would be compelled to even cancel the trading license of the company if it found guilty by the inquiry committee.

The committee was institutedby KHADC on June 23 after receiving complaints against the company’s alleging that it was posing serious threat to the drinking water source of many villages under Mawhati constituency.

Basaiawmit informed, “The inquiry committee has been asked to complete the probe within 15 days and will submit its report before the EC likely on July.”

Moving the motion, Sylliang said 10 villages have been affected because the company releases effluents directly to the Umtrew river, the main source of drinking water supply for these villages. The company is located at 9th mile Khlieh-Umtrew about 15 kilometers away from Umsning.

Sylliang said the affected villages included Nongjri, Umrnong, Umsning-Umsohlang Jagi-Road, Lumniangdot, Umsning proper-A and B, Syadheh, Syadrit, Patarim, Lumroman and Lumsainar village.

Sylliang quoted the report of the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi district, which said that the Sub-Divisional Officer of PHE reported the ten villages are tapping water supply from the Umtrew river through the different water supply schemes implemented by the department.

Sylliang also informed that during an inquiry conducted by the ADM of Ri Bhoi district, she admitted in front of the dorbar shnong that there is need to close down the company even as it was point that the company has also been found of violating the agreement signed with the dorbar shnong before its operation.- By Our Reporter

    Ardent don’t know where is his ‘head’ and where is his ‘tail’! He is in defend of the RICH coal miners and cement companies who are the polluters of many water bodies of the state. Where as in this latest story, he is against one such company in Ri Bhoi! Is it because he don’t get his ‘share’, here??
