SHILLONG, MAR 27: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Tuesday demanded the state government to consider appointing advocate general (AG) and assistant advocate generals (AAGs) from amongst the local eligible persons.
In a memorandum submitted to the minister in-charge law James K Sangma, HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said, “We request the government to take immediate stepsto appoint the AG, AAGs and senior government advocate at the earliest from amongst the local eligible persons of the state.”
The demand came after the posts were lying vacant following the resignations of the former AG, AAGs and senior government advocate.
Kharjahrin said there is no deart of capable, experienced and eligible senior advocates in the state, who are local residents and also well versed in law as well as the local practices.
“If services from our very own local senior lawyers who are eligible may be availed, then we do not see the need to appoint anyone from outside the state to advice, assist and defend the government in different legal matters,” he said.
Asked, HYC education secretary Roy Kupar Synrem informed that the law minister has assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with the chief minister Conrad K Sangma.
The minister also informed that the process for appointment of the AG and AAGs is on and the decision on the matter will be taken by the chief minister, he said.
