SHILLONG, JAN 28: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has decided to advice the Governor to approve the name of former state minister Conrad K Sangma as proposed by the council for the post of a nominated MDC.
According to GHADC, the decision was in exercise of Rule 6 (1) of the Constitution of Garo Hills District Council (Sixth Amendment) Act, 1977, which allows the council to propose and advice the Governor on this regard.
“This is also in view of the fact that the state government has kept the matter related to the appointment of the nominated member in the council pending for more than three months,” GHADC chief Denang T Sangma said.
He said, therefore, the executive committee had in exercise of Rule 6 (1) of the Constitution of the GHADC written to the Governor of Meghalaya to approve the Nomination of Conrad K Sangma at the earliest.
As per the letter submitted to the Governor on January 25, the GHADC chief said, “Now, in pursuance of the proviso the District Council has unanimously decided to propose and to advice the Governor to nominate Conrad K Sangma, a resident of Tura – Walbakgre, as member to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.”
“In this regard, the Governor is requested to give seal of approval for the nomination at the earliest,” he stated in the letter.
As per Rule 6 (1) of the Constitution of GHADC, it has clearly stated – “The District Council of the Garo Hills Autonomous District shall consist of thirty members of whom twenty-nine shall be elected on the basis of adult suffrage and the remaining one shall be nominated by the Governor on the advice of the District Council, and the allocation of seats therein shall be shown in Appendix 1 to these Rules.”-By Our Reporter
