TURA, SEPT 4: Normal life came to a grinding halt across the five districts of Garo hills on Thursday as the 12 hour bandh called by the breakaway faction of the A’chik National Volunteer’s Council (ANVC-B) passed off peacefully.  No untoward incidents were reported.

The bandh commence from 5 am to 5 pm.

The ANVC(B) is seeking central government’s intervention on the law and order situation in Garo hills. They have also sought NIA or a CBI probe into the alleged “secret killing” order issued by chief minister Mukul Sangma.
Despite an appeal from the state government to denounce the ANVC(B) bandh, the government employee did not adhere to the request as they decided to stay at home and not attend the offices. All government offices, educational institutes, banks and business establishment remained closed. Vehicles remained off the road.
At Tura, the West Garo hills deputy commissioner’s office was opened but it registered a very low attendance. Most office goers preferred to remain indoors. At 5 pm, shops at Ringre and Tura bazaar were opened.- From Our Correspondent
