SHILLONG, APR 11: Thousands of Anganwadi workers from the eleven districts of the state took to the street in Shillong to protest against the state government’s failure to pay them their wage for the past five years.
The due to be paid to the 3000 anganwadi workers by the state government is approximately Rs 9.66 lakh.
Meghalaya Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (MAWHU) secretary L Lyngdoh told reporters “The state government has failed to release the dues to over 3000 anganwadi workers since 2010.”
The MAWHU also met state acting chief secretary PBO Warjri and put forth their demand for release of payment to them.
According Lyngdoh, most of the funds for disbursing the payment to Anganwadi workers including Asha, helper and mini Anganwadi is borne by centre with the state government share of only Rs 50 each.
Lyngdoh said the workers who have passed their matriculation, the wage is fixed at Rs 3000, for under matriculation it is Rs 2933, mini anganwadi – Rs 2250 and helper is Rs 1500.
There are over 3864 Anganwadi workers under MAWHU serving in the six districts of Khasi – Jaintia region and five districts of Garo Hills region.
This is the first time that these women decided to come out in the street and protest. “We demand an immediate explanation from the state government as to why the state government failed to disburse the payment which is the right of every anganwadi workers in the state.”
Lyngdoh felt that though the amount may be small but they need to know why they are being deprived of their rights to be paid”
Meanwhile, the anganwadi workers also threatened to resort to other means of stir if the state government fails to fulfill their demand and pay them.- By Our Reporter
