All in the fray, contestants get symbols

ECISHILLONG, MAR 26: Even as nobody withdrew their nomination papers on Wednesday the  day for withdrawal of the nominations for the two Lok Sabha seats- Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats- the Election Commission also allotted election symbols to contesting candidates.

Altogether, eight candidates are all set to battle each other in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls for the Shillong seat and two candidates for the Tura seats slated on April 9.

“There was no withdrawal of nomination papers by candidates from Shillong seat,” election officials said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, regular symbols were allotted to the recognized national parties like the Indian National Congress (INC) party, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India (CPI).

The Election Commission also allotted symbols to the United Democratic Party (UDP), a recognized regional party and three Independent candidates.

UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh was allotted the drum, a symbol allotted to his party, while Aam Admi Party candidate Amerington Kharshiing was given the broom symbol.

Independent candidates – PBM Basaiawmoit was allotted with the symbol of candles, Denis Siangshai – a basket containing fruits and lone woman candidate Ivory Shylla was allotted with the television as a symbol.

Sitting MP of the Congress for Shillong seat, Vincent H Pala is defending his seat against seven other contenders including BJP candidate S Lyngdoh, CPI candidate R D Shabong and AAP’s A Kharshiing.- By Our Reporter
