SHILLONG, FEB 17: In its drive to ensure a free and fair election in West Garo hills district, the security forces and the flying squads have so far seized one AK-47 rifle , three magazines , one crude bomb , five metre copper wire , one SBBL gun , one assembled IED , two detonators switches and recovery of sixty-one cartridges including five empty INSAS cartridges.
The West Garo hills district administration also ensured that 1151 licensed arms were deposited with the district authority to ensure that they are not misuse during the election process. It also conducted extensive vulnerability mapping and identification of vulnerable hamlets and households and persons who need to be tracked. A total of 258 people have been identified and they been bound down under section 107 of CrPC
As the February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections approaches, the flying squads are all geared up in West Garo Hills to ensure that days leading to the polls are incident free.
West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi also held a review meeting on Saturday and got feedbacks from the flying squad teams about the model code of conduct violations, seizures and action taken so far.
Till Saturday, the flying squads/the video and static surveillance teams had received 18 complaints and 15 model code of conduct violations. Acting on the complaints the flying squads have been issued showcase notices in 9 cases where they have been found the complaints to be of substantial nature and needing further verification.
The flying squads also tore down posters and banners of political parties that were pasted without the written consent of the owner of the household. A lot of polling material has been seized which was being transported without any authorization and permit in the vehicles.- By Our Reporter
