SHILLONG, AUG 24: In line with the recent direction of the Centre, the state Cabinet today approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1980 for including ground handling of the airports as part of essential services.
“We have approved the amendment of the Act in order to include ground handling services of the airport under its purview,” deputy chief minister Roytre C Laloo told reporters after the meeting held here on Thursday.
With the amendment of section 2 of the Act, he said that the ground handling of the airport will now be declared as an essential service under the Meghalaya Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1980.
According to him, the amendment was made in compliance to the recent direction of the Centre government to all the states.
Asked, Laloo said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation had come up with the integrated civil aviation policy to make regional air connectivity a reality and the policy aims to take flying to the masses by making it affordable and convenient.
He said that the policy envisage that the central government will coordinate with the state governments to include ground handling under the Act, which all this while was not included.
“The letter received by the state government from the ministry has requested that the state government to urgently consider inclusion of ground handling at the airport under essential services Act in the state,” he said.
