SHILLONG, NOV 26: To improve air connectivity in the state, Meghalaya transport minister, HDR Lyngdoh on Wednesday told the assembly that the state government is taking steps to upgrade the Umroi and Baljek Airports for landing of bigger aircrafts.
“The process of acquiring additional lands for upgrading the two projects has been completed,” Lyngdoh said while replying during the question hour on Wednesday.
United Democratic Party-UDP- legislator Paul Lyngdoh questioned as to how big aircrafts can land in the existing airports saying that area of international airport is over 1225 acres.
The minister informed that apart from the existing land (224.16 acres) of the Umroi Airport, ad additional land measuring 258 acres has been acquired and handed over to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for execution of the upgradation work.
The minister informed at present the Alliance Air has also resumed its operation on Kolkata-Barapani-Kolkata sector. With regards to the Baljek Airport, he said of the existing 153 acres land, another 53 acres additional land was acquired for the development of this airport and the centre has to allot Rs 111.23 crore.
The minister however informed that the Airport Authority of India is yet to start the expansion work of Baljek Airport and said as per record there is no dispute while acquiring the lands.- By Our Reporter
