SHILLONG, MARCH 08: Persons with disabilities were given hearing aids, wheel chairs, visual aids and crutches at a function organized jointly by the Composite Regional Centre (CRC), union ministry of social justice and empowerment, MEPAD and SSA at Malki Basic School here on Friday.
Lanu W Aimol, CRC’s assistant professor of speech and hearing said that such initiatives were very essential for the social, economic and vocational rehabilitation of the disabled persons. “Various surveys conducted from time to time have made it clear that India has a very large number of disabled persons. Many of them come from low-income groups. Disability restricts their opportunities for leading functionally productive lives. From the application of modern technology, there have emerged a number of aids, which can reduce the effects of disabilities and enhance the economic potential of the disabled,” he said.
All the aids were given under the Kushabhan Thakre Scheme. “The scheme aims at helping the disabled persons by bringing suitable, durable, scientifically-manufactured, modern, standard aids and appliances within their reach so as to make it convenient for them to carry out their day-today activities,” said Aimol.
State commissioner for disability C Kharkongor said that it was a very good initiative. “We from the state would like to join hands with CRC and MEPAD again in the future to bring better facilities to persons suffering with disabilities,” he pledged.
Altogether 166 hearing aids, 18 wheel chairs, 1 crutch and 47 visual aids where distributed to the beneficiaries.
Others present on the occasion included Rajesh Kumar, special educator (CRC), Manoj Kumar, prostatic and aerostatic engineer (CRC), Marylang Kharbyngar, state IED co-ordinator and Belbora Wankar, general secretary MEPAD. (By Our Reporter)
