SHILLONG, NOV 7: All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary( in-charge Meghalaya) V Narayanasamy refused to comment on the police charge-sheet against Meghalaya social welfare minister and state Congress working president Deborah Marak on the alleged use of GNLA militants during the assembly election eve n as chief minister Mukul Sangma assured that the state government will not interfere with the process of the law.

“I cannot give my personal views on this issue,” Narayanasamy told reporters after a meeting with state Congress leaders and functionaries on Friday. He admitted that he was briefed by chief minister Mukul Sangma on the issue and said, “I got the feedback and I will definitely convey this to the president of the AICC.”

Minister Deborah Marak, who is a four time legislator from Williamnagar constituency in East Garo Hills district, has been charge sheeted by the district police for allegedly using the GNLA militants to intimidate voters in the last state assembly elections.

Independent candidate from Williamnagar Jonathon N Sangma who had unsuccessfully contested the poll accused the Deborah Marak of taking the help of the militants to influence the voters and thereby winning the election.

On this issue, Narayanasamy threw the ball in the chief minister’s court saying he is the right person to answer.

Sangma assured that the government will not interfere with the ‘law’ at any point of time.  He said, “We are here to ensure that the provision of law prevails and this is the commitment that the government has made on number of occasions to the people of the state.”

Sangma said the government will not interfere with the process of law in respect to any kind of allegation that may emerge in connect to nexus of the any government functionaries with any of the militant outfits.

Earlier, oppositions have demanded dropping of Deborah Marak as minister for her alleged links with militants.

Sangma, however, appealed for patience saying whatever is appropriate and in conformity with the need of the hour, the party will demonstrate as it is the commitment of the party to ensure that at no point of time while the party is in power will it interfere with the course of law.

There have been observations from several quarters that the alleged nexus of the minister with militants has blemished the Congress party.  On this, Sangma said, “We will handle it after all we are politicians. If one individual has been alleged to have a link, investigation is on.”- By Our Reporter
