SHILLONG, AUG 2: AICC observer Mukul Wasnik and AICC general secretary in-charge CP Joshi categorically said that the one-on-one meeting with the state Congress legislators did not discuss change of the leadership and iterated that change of guard in the Congress led state government.

The AICC leaders instead informed that the high command will evolve a strategy to strengthen the Congress ahead of 2018 state polls.

Wasnik and Joshi held meeting with party legislators, ministers, MDCs, besides party functionaries and heard their grievances.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Wasnik said they are satisfied with the discussions and are ready to go back with confidence and evolve a strategy to further strengthen the party for the upcoming 2018 polls.

He said whatever information was shared during the course of discussions have been taken with all seriousness and accordingly they will inform party’s president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi.

“We are confident that on the basis of the information and on the basis of experiences they have shared, we will be coming out with a strategy which will help the Congress party to come out as a much stronger party,” he said.

Stating the Congress will play a very responsible role in times to come, Wasnik said, “The exercise is to assess what is happening in the entire state and to know what are the challenges and opportunities before us.”

When asked what action will be taken against the alleged infightings within the state Congress party, Wasnik however avoided giving direct answer and instead said , “Whatever has been told to us by all our colleagues has been told to us in confidential and I don’t think it is appropriate on my part to make public the discussion we have conducted.”

KHADC chief Pynshngain N Syiem is also one among the Congress legislators met the AICC leaders during the day.

Syiem, who is a known Mukul baiter, told reporters that he had expressed his concern over the failure of the state government on various crucial issues pertaining to NGT ban on coal mining, MUDA encroachment, headmen.

“I have aired my concern and would leave it to the wisdom of the party high command to decide,” he said.

However when asked, Wasnik feigned ignorance on this and said, “We had a meeting with him (Syiem) but I don’t know what he told you.” He also refused to comment on the recent reports alleging the move by Syiem to float a new political party.

Later the AICC leaders accompanied by Shillong MP Vincent H Pala left for New Delhi. They have also said that the decision of the AICC will be communicated to the state leadership.-By Our Reporter
