SHILLONG, JULY 20: The Centre has given the state government a month’s time to submit its reponse with regards to the implementation of the Agreed Text of Settlement signed with the disbanded Garo militant outfits.
This was informed by the former chairman of the disbanded Achik National Volunteer Council – Breakaway (ANVC.B) after the meeting of the Centre Level Monitoring Committee held in New Delhi on Friday.
The leaders of the organization also wore black dresses as a mark of expressing their dissatisfaction against the attitude of the state government.
In a statement issued, Marak said, “In the meeting, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has expressed dissatisfaction over the state government’s negligence.”
“They (state govt) failed to respond to our queries in last 4 years and now they fail to reply to Centre’s queries. Centre gave a month’s time to prepare a respond. Monitoring Committee meeting was fixed to be held in Tura in a month’s time,” he informed.
The former leader of the disbanded outfit also said that they were surprised to know that Meghalaya is against certain provisions of the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
“Garo demands have been opposed by the state. The underdevelopment of Garo Hills which triggered the armed movements is not allowed to take a new turn through the agreement by the state. State wants to deprive the Garos of all privileges promised through the signed agreement,” he said.
On the other hand, Marak informed that the meeting could not proceed in reviewing the implementation of the Agreed Text as state did not do its duty in last 4 years.
“It’s a shame that we had more Chief Ministers from Garo Hills in the history of Meghalaya. The delay is because our Garo leaders failed to address the aspirations of the people of Garo Hills. We will meet the CM and HM soon and appraise of the negligence of the former government,” he said.
Regarding the rehabilitation of our cadres and other matters related to the agreement, he said the MHA Joint Secretary (North East) has assured to meet after a month in Tura where the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary will be invited to discuss the entire issue related to the Agreed Text.
Talking about medical college, he said that approximately Rs 125 crore has been sactioned with 0% progress adding that it is same with the roads and other projects.
