Agatha to retain Tura seat, no strong opponent against NPP in GH: Marcuise N Marak

NPP state working president and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak on Tuesday expressed confidence that the sitting Tura MP Agatha K Sangma will retain the seat as there seems to be no strong opponent from Garo Hills.

“I am so sorry to say this but I don’t see any strong opponent from Garo Hills,” Marak told reporters. According to him, the other political parties are yet to declare their respective candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

However, going by the results of the 2023 Assembly polls, Marak said that NPP alone had won 18 out of 24 seats from Garo Hills.

“And in 2-3, we lost by a very small margin. Therefore, I don’t see any strong opponent from Garo Hills,” he sadded.

Stating that NPP will surely retain the Tura seat, Marak said, “If you go to Garo Hills, you can see lots of centrally sponsored projects…many projects have been completed from the government of India, so many projects have been sanctioned and it has benefited the people of Garo Hills. Therefore, she (Agatha) will win.”

On the BJP’s allegation against implementation of CSS in the region, the NPP leader said, “Which projects is he (Bernard N Marak, Tura MDC) saying that there are lapses so that accordingly we can take correctional measures. Frankly speaking there are no lapses at all. Point me which project. We have to get the name of the project only then we will believe that there is a lapses but when you cannot mention a project name which has lapses which is an incomplete and government is doing nothing we can say yes there is lapses but you cannot mention anything and you simply say there is lapses, we cannot believe that.”

On Congress’ decision to either field former cabinet minister Deborah Marak or Gambegre MLA Saleng A Sangma from Tura, Mrak said, “Then Deborah’s popularity was there, probably because of that she was almost defeating Agatha but now it is a totally different scenario. You can see and watch.

They were at the peak of their popularity (during that time) but now it has totally changed.”
