SHILLONG, JUNE 6: Wansuk Myrthong, the first and only woman to have climbed the world’s highest peak Mount Everest from Meghalaya, is all set to get double promotion and soon might be donning a star as proposal for making her the assistant sub inspector in the 1st MLP battalion has already been put in motion.
At present Myrthong is a constable in the 1st MLP battalion but ever since she achieved the feat of climbing Mount Everest, there have been murmurs in police circle that she will be given an out of turn promotion for her achievement.
Now Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma has also spoken of the reward that is awaiting Myrthong for the wonderful feat that brought laurel to the state. He said,“The lady constable was a member of the first North-East India Everest expedition team, which scaled the peak recently. We propose to
reward her appropriately for this magnificent feat.”
Myrthong’s battalion commandant AR Mawthoh said that he is waiting for government’s nod to promote Myrthong to the post of assistant sub-inspector. Mawthoh also hosted bara khana on Thursday for the constable who made the battalion and Meghalaya proud.
Myrthong was also felicitate by Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary and she was also honoured by allowing her plant a
rare ‘Maidenhair’ tree sapling inside the sprawling Shillong Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, which scientists said would live for over 3000 years.
Wansuk is the second person from Meghalaya to have scaled Mt Everest,8,848 metres above sea level. Gary Jarman Lamare, a photographer with
Discovery Channel was the first one from Meghalaya to have conquered the peak in May last year.-By Our Reporter
