SHILLONG, MAR 24: Enraged at being sacked adhoc PWD department employees threatened to go for agitations against the state government’s failure to reinstating them.
The adhoc employees claimed that it is their legitimate right to livelihood after having served the department for decades stating that there are “rules” clearly indicating scope for regularization of their services.
The All Meghalaya Officiating Employees PWD Roads and Building Association (AMOEPRBA), which was earlier disallowed to hold a sit-in-demonstration, have now been granted permission by district authority for the same on March 29.
“We are ready to stage the protest to demand that the state government consider reinstating our services taking into account that many of us have been serving the department for decades,” association president K Marwein said on Thursday.
Marwein also said that the association which is having more than hundred employees, who have been affected by the sudden termination and are compelled to take to agitations till their demand, is fulfilled.
The state government recently issued a standing order directing all departments to put a stop against the culture of adhoc appointments.
Most of adhoc appointments are often viewed as ‘backdoor’ or ‘political appointments’ as recruitments are not made through proper procedures and this has irked unemployed and job seekers.
It is also learnt that the adhoc appointments are mostly made at the departmental level.
When asked, association executive member Baris Thabah said, “We would disagree that we are political appointees because it is never our fault as the appointment was given to us by the department.”
Stating there are adhoc employees who have served more than 30 years, he said, “We were even given hope that our services would be regularized.” According to him, there are rules indicating that services of employees who are working for more than 10 years can be regularized.
He also alleged the termination of adhoc employees is taking place only in the PWD department and not in other departments of the government.
“Even in the PWD department, not all divisions are affected by this decision of terminating adhoc employees,” Thabah said.
The association has appealed to the state government to find out ways and means to reinstate the services of the adhoc employees. Marein said they also appeal to all the legislators in the Khasi and Jaintia hills to take up the issue with the government.-By Our Reporter
