SHILLONG, JULY 5: The adhoc school teachers under the banner of the Federation of School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) on Tuesday called off their indefinite protest after the state government had enhanced the grant-in-aid to the adhoc schools.
“The CEC of the FASTOM has decided to call off this agitation,” FASTOM spokesperson Mayborn Lyngdoh said while addressing the agitating adhoc teachers after the meeting.
On Monday, the FASTOM did not withdraw the protest immediately after the state cabinet had announced its decision to enhance the grant-in-aid to the adhoc schools by Rs 100 crore citing that teachers were not happy at all.
Lyngdoh however claimed that the adhoc teachers have won the fight.
“It is very rare in Meghalaya that you win fights but we have won the fight. (Now) we can go back home with dignity, we won,” he said.
The FASTOM leader further assured the teachers that they will pursue with the government to implement the 5 percent yearly increment.
“We will have a dialogue with the government so we will keep exploring this 5%,” he said.
The state government had refused to discuss the demand for 5% yearly increment citing that the adhoc schools are purely privately run and that the adhoc teachers are being appointed by the schools managing committees and not the government.
