SHILLONG, FEB 3: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) leader Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday slammed the chief minister for allegedly “singing different tune” for traditional institutions in Khasi hills and Garo hills.
Nongrum, also a former chief of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), went on to accuse the chief minister of attempting to “communalize” the issue among the traditional heads of the three tribes.
He was reacting to the recent statement made by the chief minister Mukul Sangma while addressing at the 14th annual Nokma Council Conference held in his home constituency, Ampati, in South West Garo hills.
Sangma had stated, “The Nokmas have to take the responsibility to revive their unique system, which is accepted and enshrined in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Nongrum said, “It is an irony, the same person (CM) who is trying to dilute the traditional system in Khasi-Jaintia region by attempting to legislate a state law, which is against the Sixth Schedule, is now speaking about the Sixth Schedule in Garo Hills.”
He said the chief minister had assured that the state government will ensure further empower and strengthen the Nokmas in Garo hills as per the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
“Is this statement not design to create communal clash among the Khasis, Jaintias and the Garos,” he asked.
Nongrum further alleged, “Such statement is design to divide the indigenous community of Khasis and Jaintias in order to ensure that he retain the chief minister’s chair in the upcoming 2018 elections,” adding “People should open their eyes to see the divide and rule policy of this present leader (CM).”
Meanwhile, the KHNAM leader further lambasted the Khasi cabinet ministers in the Mukul ministry for allegedly enjoying hanging themselves on to the CM’s bus but forgetting their important role as true law makers.-By Our Reporter
