SHILLONG, APR 9: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said action will be taken against schools which are found to have violated the order issued by the state government.
Last month, the state government had declared 2020 as a ‘no detention’ year for all students except those appearing for class 10 and class 12 board exams.
The minister has also taken note of complaints against certain schools which have gone ahead to detain students despite the order.
“Parents should complain to the District School Education Officer or the Sub Divisional School Education Officer against action by such schools for necessary action,” he said.
He said moreover, detaining students below class 8 is against the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
On the other hand, the education minister said that the state government is yet to decide on whether to close down schools and other educational institutions in view of the sudden surge of COVID-19 cases in the state.
“There is no decision taken on this regard so far. (However) necessary decisions will be taken at an appropriate time if it is needed (that schools should be closed down),” he said.
Stating that the pandemic situation is a new normal, the minister said that the people have had one year of experience due to COVID-19. “Therefore, we should know how to take care of ourselves to prevent the spread of the disease in the state,” he asserted.
