Action against OC sought

SHILLONG, JULY 25: Nippen M Sangma, a resident of Bijasik Chisim Apal, on Monday sought action against officer in-charge of Dagal police outpost for illegally detaining and assaulting him on the pretext that he was having nexus with the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

In a petition submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills District, Sangma said, “I request that strong and appropriate action be taken against the police officer and his team for violation of human rights, detaining me illegally, causing me severe mental and physical pain and for misusing of power.”

Sangma also demanded necessary instruction be given to the Dagal police outpost to pay all medical expenses for his further treatment.

Sangma alleged that police team led by in-charge CK Marak came to his residence on July 10, at around 4 pm and took him to the Dagal police outpost.

“They started asking some provocative questions like you are helping and harbouring the outfit GNLA and behaving rudely with other neighbouring villagers,” Sangma stated in the complaint.

He informed that when he replied that he was never involved in such kind of activities and against villagers, one of the police personnel, who was an inebriated condition started beating him randomly with stick (rebet), kicking and then after by the officer in-charge himself.

According to him, the reason for his inability to file the complaint on time was due to the fact that he was hospitalize in the Civil Hospital, Williamnagar.

Earlier, Sangma’s relatives had also met the DSP and lodged a verbal complaint against the officer and his team. The DSP assured to pay all medical expenses. On this, Sangma said that he was not satisfied since his health is deteriorating after he was beaten and the doctor has advised him to go for further treatment in good hospital.-By Our Reporter
