SHILLONG, MAR 1: Nine Bangladeshi nationals mainly women were apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) from along the international border at South West Khasi Hills District and later handed over to the Border Gaurds of Bangladesh.
The apprehended persons included one male and eight women who are residents of Kaithakona village undder Sunamganj district of Bangladesh.
They were en-route for marketing in the weekly market at Khanjoy under the district, BSF officials said in a statement issued on Friday.
Huge quantity vegetables alongwith other personal belongings were also seized from their possession, they said.
According to the BSF officials, the force has carried out intensive operations along the Indo-Bangla border by conducting frisking and checking of vehicular movement after receiving inputs of Bangaldeshis involving in trans-border crossing.
The BSF has been changing its strategy in order to prevent the influx through illegal trafficking and criminal activities as well as smuggling of contraband items.
Stating that Kaithakona is very close to the international border, the BSF said due to non-existence of Indo-Bangladesh border fence at many places, at times Bangladeshi nationals illegally enter into Indian territory taking advantage of thick vegetation.
In this instant case these Bangladeshis had infiltrate into Indian Territory through unfenced jungle area for attending the weekly market which was approximately 8 km via jungle and approximately 20 km via road.
During preliminary questioning, the apprehended persons revealed that they had illegally crossed international border to visit Khanjoy weekly market.
Later, all the apprehended persons were handed over to the BGB, who assured to take proper legal action against them as per law of the land for illegally crossing the international border, the BSF said.
