TURA, JULY 26: Like every year flood continues to play havoc in Garo hills as 71 villages have already been submerged and the numbers is likely to rise as the flood situation remained grim in plain belt areas of West Garo hills on Wednesday with about 35,000 plus household being displaced.
Garo hills is experiencing rain continuously for the past six days posing danger to many other areas in plain belt, which is likely to be affected. Till last report came in, flood has created havoc in Selsella, Phulbari and Rajabala area.
The Brahmaputra river and Jinjiram continued to create havoc because of the rising water level engulfing more areas came under water.
Nine relief camps have been set up in Hallidayganj, where more than 15000 were affected.
There has been at least a feet rise in water levels across most places in the plain belt, since last evening and we are closely monitoring the situation though GR (gratuitous relief) has still not been called for,” said deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills Pravin Bakshi.
An FIR was filed today and a report submitted as is required under new norms of National Disaster Management Authority.
Submerged areas include Paham, Hallidayganj, Rajabala, Bhaitbari, Wadagokgre, Balachanda. Most affected households however have refused to leave their houses mainly due to the fear of theft. Residents of Hallidayganj circle however have started to live in camps due to the increasing water levels.-From Our Correspondent
