SHILLONG, JAN 4: Five persons have been tested positive for the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 in the state on Tuesday.
Confirming this, Principal Secretary in-charge Health & Family Welfare department Sampath Kumar said that of the total COVID-19 cases sent for genome sequencing, five were tested for the Omicron virus.
Of these, three are from Shillong in East Khasi Hills and two are from Ri Bhoi district and all of them are returnees, he informed.
The two cases in Ri Bhoi are from Saiden village and in Shillong, one each from Langkyrding, Happy Valley and Laitumkhrah.
He informed that the department is tracing the high risk contacts of all the five cases.
Asked, Kumar said all the high risk contacts of the cases sent for genome sequencing have been asked to undergo home quarantine.
If the department is going for more tests with the outbreak of Omicron in the state, he however said, “For that, the cases have to have travel history. However, if the high risk contacts are showing symptoms, testing will immediately be conducted.”
