SHILLONG, NOV 15: The Achik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) today served a five-day ultimatum to the Tura Member of Parliament (MP) Conrad K Sangma to take up with the centre on the demand for a central university in Garo Hills.
In a letter to Conrad, the association president Harley DN Sangma also threatened to protest against the MP if he failed to initiate anything in support to the demand within five days.
He informed that the association had earlier in April this year submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for setting up of a full-fledged central university in Garo Hills.
The association had also proposed that the university be named as Garo Hills University with the aim to meet the aspirations of the students’ community to pursue higher studies.
“We have met you twice this year regarding this demand and had given you copy of memorandum but it is very sad to say you being our representative have not given interest to our genuine demand,” Harley said.
He also alleged that Conrad had failed to dispatch any letter to the concerned ministers and had not raised this demand in the parliament.
“Therefore, we are compelled to serve five-day ultimatum and expect that you being a young leader and having knowledge of the importance of higher education, will not deny to give your strong support to our demand,” he stated.
