SHILLONG, APR 27: Undeterred by the state government’s and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) unresponsive attitude to their demand for repairing the dilapidated National Highway 44, five Jaintia hills based ngos with the support of traditional heads announced 48 hours ‘total-shutdown’ from April 30.
The bandh, which was announced on Sunday, will be from 5 am of April 30 to 5am of May 2.
The decision to to call for 48 hours hand was taken at a meeting of the five ngos – All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization (AJYWO), Khasi Students Union – Jaintia Hills District Unit (KSU-JHDU), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front – East Jaintia Zone (HNYF-EJZ), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People – Khliehriat Circle (FKJGP-KC) and the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong – East Jaintia hills held recently.
“We have decided to intensify our agitational programmes till our demand for immediate repairing of the road is met,” the ngos leaders said in a joint statement issued on Sunday.
The NH-44 stretching from Soomer to Malidor is in a deplorable condition making mobility of the vehicles and people of the region difficult as both NHAI and the state government have failed to repaire the road for the past two years.
The ngos, however, informed only ambulances, mortuary vans and vehicles of the media will be allowed to ply on the roads while appealing to others to support the bandh.
The ngos also warned that they will not take any responsibility if any incidents take place during the 48 hours bandh.
The ngos also appealed to the headmen of all villages in the district, other ngos and the public to cooperate and support the bandh as they had done earlier.
The ngos also appealed to the public of neighboring states of north east India to extend their support as the issue is of common interest to other north eastern states as well.
The ngos also threatened to resort to even more rigorous steps if the state government and NHAI fails to respond to their demand.- By Our Reporter
