SHILLONG, JAN 30: Twenty-nine out of the forty-one sitting legislators are crorepatis.
This was as per the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Meghalaya Election Watch, which have analyzed the criminal, financial and other background details of 41 out of 60 sitting MLAs.
In the current assembly, 19 seats are vacant.
This analysis was based on the affidavits submitted by the candidates prior to the 2018 Assembly elections and bye elections conducted thereafter.
In term of party wise crorepati MLAs, there are 14 (70%) out of 20 MLAs from NPP, 5 (63%) out of 8 MLAs from AITC, 6 (75%) out of 8 MLAs from United Democratic Party, 3 (100%) out of 3 MLAs from BJP and 1 (50%) out of 2 from Peoples Democratic Front MLAs have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.
The ADR and Meghalaya Election Watch said that the average of assets per sitting MLA is Rs.7.80 crore.
The average assets per MLA for 20 NPP MLAs analysed is Rs.6.65 crores, 8 AITC MLAs analysed is Rs.6.05 crores, 8 United Democratic Party MLAs analysed is Rs.14.45 crores, 3 BJP MLAs analysed is Rs.6.39 crores and 2 Peoples Democratic Front MLAs have average assets of Rs.1.90 crores.
The top three MLAs with high assets include UDP chief and Mairang legislator Metbah Lyngdoh with a total assets of Rs 87,26,55,788 of which Rs 43,76,76,288 (movable assets) and Rs 43,49,79,500 (immovable assets), NPP legislator from Mawhati Dasakhiatbha Lamare with a total assets of Rs 40,37,80,070 of which Rs 4,01,61,555 (movable assets) and Rs 36,36,18,515 (immovable assets) and NPP legislator from Raliang Comingone Ymbon with a total assets of Rs 26,39,16,609 of which Rs 6,94,16,609 (movable assets) and Rs 19,45,00,000 (immovable assets).
The three MLAs with the lowest assets include NPP legislator from Bajengdoba Pongseng Marak with total assets of Rs 2,99,024 of which Rs 99,024 (movable assets) and Rs 2,00,000 (immovable assets), AITC legislator from Chokpot Lazarus M. Sangma has only movable assets at Rs 4,35,000 and UDP legislator from Mokaiaw Nujorki Sungoh with movable assets of Rs 4,54,820.
Further, 19(46%) out of 41 MLAs have declared liabilities.
The top three MLAs with highest liabilities include Metbah Lyngdoh has liabilities of Rs 30,23,62,533, AITC legislator from Nongthymmai Charles Pyngrope with Rs 2,35,32,209 and chief minister and South Tura legislator Conrad K Sangma with Rs 1,58,06,933.
NPP legislator from Williamnagar Marcuise N Marak has declared criminal cases against himself.
The cases related to Sedition (IPC Section-124A) and Punishment for criminal intimidation (IPC Section-506).
Meanwhile, 18 (44%) MLAs have declared their education qualification to be between 8th pass and 12th pass while 23 (56%) MLAs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above.
16 (39%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 25 and 40 years while 24 (59%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 41 and 60 years and 1 MLA has declared his age above 60 years.
Out of 41 MLAs analysed, 2 (5%) MLAs are women.
