200 doctors failed to report

SHILLONG, SEPT 14: Nearly 200 MBBS doctors sponsored by the state government failed to join the government service in the state that is facing acute shortage of manpower in the medical sector during the past 11 years. Replying in the assembly on Wednesday, Health Minister Roshan Warjri said, “A total of 197 doctors did not join government service during the period from 2000-2001 up to 2010-2011.”

She informed that only 28 doctors, who refused to serve in the state, have so far paid the penalty bond after notices were served by the state government.

Expressing concern on the issue, opposition leader Donkupar Roy said that the bond agreement alone is not sufficient to ensure doctors reports back to the state.

When he asked whether the government proposed to take any additional measure to ensure doctors come back and serve in the state, the minister repied in affirmative. Meanwhile, over 285 doctors who were sponsored from the year 2012-2013 till 2015-16 are yet to complete their medical studies.-By Our Reporter
