SHILLONG, MAY 13: At least two persons were killed in rain-related incidents in the state on Friday, officials said.
43-year-old Sidres Kharsahnoh, a resident of Jongksha village under Mawkynrew block in East Khasi Hills district, died when a landslide occurred submerging him.
In Byrnihat, Ri Bhoi District, one person also died while four others were injured when a tree fell on an auto-rickshaw they were travelling, they said.
Due to heavy rainfall, Wahumkhrah river, flowing along Demseiniong was flooded, East Khasi Hills District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said.
Instruction was given to PWD, SDRF & Police to initiate immediate assessment of the situation and necessary action to avoid any further damage and inconvenience.
The guard wall of the BSF compound at Umpling was partially damaged as it collapsed due to the heavy rainfall. No casualty was reported. The concerned Block Development Officer, MUDA, were instructed to assess the degree of the damage, it said.
A wall in Madanriting Block-C was reported to have collapsed, leaving the debris spilling to an adjacent premises of the Madan Hindi Patshala School. No casualty was reported. The concerned BDO, MUDA, PWD and police were deputed to take immediate necessary action.
Landslide also occurred at Pynursla road and the NHIDCL has cleared the debris.
Flood occurred at the Hubert Memorial Secondary School, Umpling and PWD was deputed to take necessary action.
