The HNLC will be celebrating its silver jubilee on 14 August and as such security in the State has been tightened. As August 14 happens to be the foundation day of the HNLC and this year it will be completing twenty-five years of its formation, the police are extra vigilant on the security aspect.
The militant organizations that have called for the Independence Day bandh are ULFA, National Democratic Front of Bodoland, Kamtapur Liberation Organisation, Coordination Committee Manipur, Tripura Peoples Democratic Front, National Liberation Front of Tripura and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council.
In a joint statement issued by all these organization it said, “ India’s ‘Independence Day Celebrations’ comes off on the 15th August 2012 are imposed, with a dirty politics behind it, to our innocent people in our region through the Puppet-governments of the ‘states’ who are political stooges, tamed and domesticated by Indian colonialism and hegemony.”
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills City SP M Kharkhrang told Oh! Megahalaya on Monday that security have been upped in and around the city. He said, “ Police are on high alert to stop the militant organization from disturbing the Independence Day celebration.”
According to the police there are reports that HNLC cadres have crossed over from Bangladesh headed towards the city to disturb the Independence Day celebration. –By Our Reporter
