SHILLONG, SEPT 13: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Saturday served show cause notices to fifteen shops at Laitumkrhah after they were found operating their businesses without trading license.
A checking drive to Iew Shyllong in Laitumkhrah was conducted by the officials of the enforcement wing of the KHADC along with the Dorbar Shnong of Laitumkhrah on Saturday morning.
“We have served show cause notices to as many as fifteen shops belonging to non-indigenous community after they failed to obtain any trading license from the council,” one of the enforcement staffs said here.
During the drive, it was also found there was lot of benami transaction of business as most of the shops belonging to Khasi people were given to non-indigenous to run their businesses.
Most of the non-indigenous traders are from Barpeta, Assam. They informed that they are paying up to Rs 3.50 lakh annually to the shop owners.
The enforcement staffs also found that in one of the shops running a scrap business owned by one Abu Malik who claimed that he had taken the rented the shop from a tribal woman. He said that he had to pay the woman Rs 16, 000 monthly besides employing ten people (also non-indigenous) for collecting scrap from different parts of Shillong city.
Some of the traders who have allegedly got the no objection certificate (NOC) from the Dorbar Shnong have failed to approach the KHADC for necessary licenses. “They have been running the illegal business for more than 10 to 15 years on the ground that they have got the NOC from the dorbar shnong which is not acceptable,” an official said.
The official also informed that the district council is giving 15 days time to all these illegal traders to get trading license from the KHADC.- By Our Reporter
