SHILLONG, SEPT 23: Meghalaya health minister AL Hek informed about 1,300 cancer patients had been admitted in the two government hospitals during the last one year even as he said that there might be more such patients who might be getting treated elsewhere.
Answering to a query by UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh during the ongoing autumn session of the state assembly, Hek said that the government is conducting cancer awareness programmes, cancer detection camps, and cancer-screening programmes from time to time.
Mawthoh said reports projected northeast as a region with high prevelance of cancer cases especially oral and oesophageal cancer.
Hek informed that the Shillong Civil Hospital provides assistance to cancer patients that includes chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy using Cobalt 60 therapy unit. However, at the Tura Civil Hospital, only chemotherapy is being provided, he saod.
Hek also informed that the construction of the new cancer wing at the Shillong Civil Hospital is in progress.- By Our Reporter
