SHILLONG, NOV 4: The Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) has called for a 12-hour ‘bandh’ on November 12 in West Khasi hills district only to demand the removal of the deputy commissioner of West Khasi Hills District for his alleged failure to prove that its members are involved in arson cases in the district.
The decision was also taken for the failure of the DC to immediately ‘release’ and ‘withdraw’ the Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) against its leaders who were arrested by the police.
The 6 am to 6 pm bandh will be effective only in the entire West Khasi Hills District, HANM-WKHD vice president W Sohshang said in a statement issued on Monday. He said, “We demand that the arrested leaders including HANM WKHD president Arphul Kharbani and finance secretary Gabriel Sohlang be immediately release.”
Sohshang said the deputy commissioner should immediately be removed for his failure to give evidence that their leaders are behind the alleged arson cases in hurled petrol bomb at the government offices in Nongstoin.”
On September 26, Aphul Kharbani and Gabriel Sohlang along with 19 others were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in burning down government offices in Nongstoin. The three offices included PWD, KHADI and Fisheries department of the government.
The incidents took place during the hours of the office picketing called by the organization in the district. Three cases have been registered against the leaders under section 447/448/436 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and 89 (A) of the MMPO Act.- By Our Reporter
