SHILLONG, FEB 27: Five women and seven men, including the owner and manager of the hotel in Police Bazar where they were staying, were arrested late last night for allegedly engaging in flesh trade.
Police said acting on a tip off, a squad of the anti–human trafficking unit of the police led by East Khasi hills additional superintendent of police Vivek Syiem raided the hotel and found the women and men inside rooms that were locked from outside. Four of the arrested women are from Assam and other one is from Shella village, while three of the men were Garos and the other two non-tribals.
Police later also arrested Sukanta Paul, the owner of Bella Lodge located at Jail Road Transverse Lane, and his manager, Achit Chanda. Paul had been running the lodge for past four months.
Police said they are investigating the matter to know the extent of the racket. (By Our Reporter)
