SHILLONG, NOV 12: If winter in Shillong is here can the wooly business be far behind. Impossible, as the ten days “Woolen Expo” organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in collaboration with Central Wool Development Board which was inaugurated on Tuesday indicates.
The Woolen Expo will witness the participation of the woolen weavers from various north eastern states besides state like Jammu and Kashmir. And the good news for the state is that the ICC has expressed its willingness to open up a Wool Bank in Meghalaya, a move that will certainly generate employment to the unemployed youths of the state.
Addressing the inaugural function of the 3rd Woolen Expo, the ICC regional manager Ishantor Sobhapandit said that the ICC last year had submitted a proposal to the Meghalaya government to setup a woolen bank in Meghalaya.
Sobhapandit said that the woolen bank can go a long way in solving the employment problems as the utilization of woolen products is more in Meghalaya due to its cold climate.
According to Sobhapandit, Meghalaya would be able to produce the best woolen products at a competitive price , if the proposed woolen bank comes up in Meghalaya.
Meghalaya industries & commerce department principal secretary PW Ingty who was also present on the occasion lauded the efforts of the organisers organising the woolen expo in Shillong.
Ingty said as the raw materials come from outside the state, this event would encourage the people of Meghalaya to start venturing in the woolen sector and start production of woolen products.
The Registrar of Cooperative Societies joint registrar H Lyngkhoi even asked Self Help Groups (SHG), cooperative societies and individuals in the state to venture into the woolen sector which can solve the problem of unemployment in the state to a large extent. – By Our Reporter
