SHILLONG, DEC 17: The Williamnagar Government College Students’ Union (WGCSU) on Thursday sought the state government’s immediate intervention to address the grievances faced by the students of the college.
According to the union, one of the major problem which has adversely affected the proper functioning of the college was the absence of a full-fledged principal and vice principal.
“We appeal to the authorities to take up the matter and speed up the appointment of a full-fledged principal and vice principal of the college,” WGCSU Lutan A Sangma said in a letter to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday.
He informed that the state government had actually already appointed a full-fledged principal of the college last last year.
“However, a senior lecturer from East Khasi hills district, who was appointed for the post have failed to join the college till today,” Lutan said while adding this has affected the college and the students.
He said, “We have also urged the authorities concerned for the replacement of the said lecturer and appointed other efficient and willing teachers for the post.”
Meanwhile, the union also demanded the state government to fulfill the pending demands related to the appointment of lecturers in eight vacant posts in the different departments lying since 2011.
According to him, the post of the deputy librarian sanctioned to the college also remained vacant since July last year.
Stating that the college has an enrollment of 1104 students using the library, he said, “We have demanded the government to create the post and appointment of a librarian to meet the needs of the students besides construction of a separate library building.”
The union has also demanded the introduction of Science and Commerce stream and new departments in the under graduate level which include sociology and philosophy.
The union stated that this is needed to cater to the many under-privileged students of the area who are interested in joining science and commerce streams besides the other subjects.
The other demands of the union also include the upgradation of the college building, construction of permanent boundary wall, college bus and creation of post of bus driver and appointment of lecturers for higher secondary in economics & history.-By Our Reporter
